#Repost@photofestivalau ・・・ PHOTO 2022 artist Ezz Monem (@ezzmonem) is a photo-based artist from Egypt who lives and works in Melbourne. He uses photography to explore the pluralism of reality, playing with sensations of ambivalence and conflict, and giving visual form to the multiplicity of identity in places, people, and objects.
Monem sources images from found photos, fiction films, videos and Google Street View, utilising the mechanical reproduction capabilities of the camera along with various darkroom techniques to transform them into photographic works and imaginary archives. Through the repurposing of images, Monem makes autoethnographic works drawing on his background growing up in Egypt and his experience migrating to Australia.

Exposure Site is a group exhibition inaugurating the arrival of eight new artists coming into the Gertrude Studio Program across 2022. The presentation includes a curated selection of recent and new work from the incoming practitioners, surveying their current material or conceptual explorations at a point of shifting presence: both professionally for the artists with the increased visibility and access offered by the program and on a broader level for audiences returning to galleries and cultural spaces after a time of separation.

Shortlisted for the Incinerator Art Award
The series ‘Revolutionary Failure’ has been shortlisted for the Incinerator Art Award and it will be exhibited at @incinerator_gallery, opening soon!
These images have been created by Ezz Monem in response to the tenth anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 during 18 days of protest in Cairo. These images have been revised from the artist’s archive and re-photographed.
An acid wash has erased parts of the emulsion from the film surface before the photograph is manually developed. The final results are located between re-photographs and deliberate erasures. Conceptually marking the passing of the revolution from a lived experience into the realm of a historical event.
Revolutionary Failure reflects a process of remembering the past whilst simultaneously attempting to forget historic events.
Ezz’s photographs will be displayed at this year’s Incinerator Art Award Exhibition, opening soon! To read more, visit https://bit.ly/IncineratorAA2021
